Homemade Applesauce

A friend and I decided last year to make applesauce and loved it so much, we decided we had to do it again this year. Last year we decided to go pick the apples first and then make the applesauce. And while that was tons of fun, the added 2 babies this year along with our 4 other children made for too much going on to do both. So this year, she picked the apples up at a stand and saved us half a days work!
Starting with all the apples she picked up. (and we only made it through 1 box!)
Yummm...can you just smell the apples cooking?
And look at all this applesauce we will be able to enjoy throughout the winter.

Yum!! We just went apple picking yesterday and have a TON of apples to make into applesauce. Are you going to freeze yours? And did you use a recipe or just make it up as you went? This is my first time doing this, so since you've done it before, any advice you have would be great!

Great questions! Its super easy. We used the apple peeler/corer/slicer and then removed any last bits of peel or core. We chopped the apple into 4 sections and dumped that into a pan. Poured some water into it. Don't use a lot just enough to make it like a thick stew consistency. Let it simmer on the stove for a while, stirring occasionally. The stirring process is what helps break up the apples so they aren't so big. We love chunky applesauce so this wasn't hard to do. Once you have the consistency you are looking for, you can add the sugar, cinnamon or any other spices. For the pot size above we used about 1 cup of sugar. I don't like all the added sugar, so we tried to use it sparingly. Put a little in, taste and add until it tastes the way you want.
We definitely freeze it. I put it into the containers you see in the last picture and those have gone straight into the freezer. (once they cool):) We did this last year and we had applesauce until March or April. It really lasts a long time.
Good luck!! Hope this helps.

I was going to ask for the recipe too! Thanks! I canned some apple pie filling last year with my mom, my first canning experience. Not as scary as I thought it might be :) The orchards around here have had a really dismal turn out this season, but it sure looks like you got a whole bunch of apple deliciousness!
